The Harlingen Waterworks currently employs 2 full time meter readers and 1 part time meter reader. These gentlemen are responsible for reading the water meters throughout the City of Harlingen as well as some out lying areas. Each reader reports to the main office located at 134 E. Van Buren at the start of their day. They pick up their handheld meter reading unit and head out to the streets and alleys. These men walk anywhere from a few blocks at a time up to several miles per day. They must open each meter box, pick up the reading, key it to the handheld unit, and then replace the meter box lid before going to the next meter. They each read approximately 465 meters per day. Needless to say they are in very good physical condition as they work in all kinds of conditions. The conditions range from pleasant to extreme heat or cold.
