Performs skilled welding tasks in the installation, maintenance and repair of equipment, fixtures, and machinery for the Harlingen Water Works System.  A Welder I is expected to exercise independent judgment for all assignments received and to take initiative with reasonable guidance from the Welder II and supervisor in determining the necessary repairs and/or adjustments. Work is conducted under immediate supervision and evaluated through observation and efficiency of duties performed.  Physical strength and endurance are required to perform manual labor for extended periods of time, possibly in adverse weather and working conditions.

  • Fabricates various components used to maintain waterworks equipment
  • Performs welding tasks such as grinds, bevels, welds, chips weld slag to repair and maintain pumps, motors, lift stations, water and sewer treatment plants, vehicles, equipment and fixtures associated with water works operations.
  • Perform all departments requests on any welding or cutting as required and/or needed on cast iron, carbon steel, brass, bronze and aluminum sheet, tubing and pipe.
  • Works from drawings, sketches, process sheets, work orders and verbal instructions
  • Selects equipment and plans layouts, assembly, and welding, applying knowledge of welding, physical properties of metal machining, weld shrinkage and welding techniques.
  • Layout, positions, aligns, cuts, assembles, and fits metal components together in various body positions and in various places.
  • Bolts, clamps, and tack-welds parts to secure in position for welding.
  • Sets up equipment and welds parts, using arc welder, mega welder and plasma welder
  • Weld metal materials to piping systems equipment using the appropriate welding procedure for the various equipment and metal types involved.
  • Manufactures bumpers for Water Works vehicles, trailers, hitches and flat bed trucks.
  • Responds to calls for break repair and sewer services.
  • Performs repetitive tasks using standard welding procedures, tools, materials, machines, and equipment.
  • Assists in performing preventative maintenance measures for Waterworks.
  • Assists in general duties of the shop to include receiving material, running errands, issuing materials, and assuring the cleanliness of the shop area.
  • May operate crane truck, portable pumps, generators.
  • Performs a variety of duties and related work as required/assigned; such work area cleanup and safety related duties

Essential Job Requirements


  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Technical School training in welding and/or one year experience as a welder or any equivalent combination of education and experience.


  • Must have a valid Texas driver’s license
  • CDL with tanker endorsements preferred or ability to attain with three months of hire


  • Must have experience in general welding and repair work
  • Must be able to weld using various materials such as carbon steel, stainless steel and aluminum
  • Must have working knowledge of the common practices, tools, methods, and techniques used in the welding trades
