20.09 — Water Treatment Plant Operator/Maintenance

Incumbent will perform all operational duties at water treatment plants and distribution on a shift basis to functionally supply the city with potable water. Incumbent will also be responsible for the operation and maintenance of equipment at the water treatment plant(s). Additional responsibilities include controlling mechanical, electrical, and chemical equipment involved in pumping and/or treating water, as well as assisting in the maintenance of equipment and plants as necessary. Work is performed in accordance with established procedures; reviewed through the analysis of reports and periodic plant inspections and proficiency of performing assigned duties. Assignments often include the use of standard hand tools, the operation of power driven equipment, company trucks or other equipment. Work is evaluated through observation and efficiency of duties performed. Work is performed on a rotating shift and at times under immediate supervision.

Qualifications

Operate and perform maintenance duties of a surface water treatment plant on an assigned shift; work includes checking settling basin clarifiers, filters, chemical feed machines, pumps, chlorinators and any plant maintenance necessary. Collects water samples from various locations and performs chemical analysis to include pH, alkalinity, hardness, and residual chlorine; (other tests include bacteriological count such as bacteria, plate count, etc. and document results along with daily plant procedures.) Inspect plant equipment and machinery to determine proper operation; make repairs, make adjustments, install equipment as necessary. Prepare reports of any equipment deficiencies or recommendations. Ability to maintain inventory of chemical supplies to include but not limited to chlorine, aluminum sulfate, lime, carbon, sodium chloride and various other chemical required in the treatment of water. Assists in instructing new employees in work methods and procedures; determine the need for special attention to operation or maintenance requirements and make recommendations to the Water Plant Superintendent. Monitors plant security system/cameras and report any breach in security to Superintendent or proper authority. Maintain plant buildings and grounds as necessary. Perform related work as required/assigned within the Water Services Department.

Essential Job Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED (required); Technical courses in water plant operations or a combination of experience and training (PREFERRED)
  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License; CDL Class “B” with Air Brakes and Tanker Endorsements- written tests completed before hire and driving test to be completed within 3 months of hire.
  • Certification at an “A”, “B”, “C”, or “D” level in surface water plant operations or ability to obtain within a set time
  • Water Treatment experience (PREFERRED)
  • Some basic computer skills and customer service experience.
  • Experience in using basic hand tools and some large equipment.
  • Must have the skills and ability necessary to use the tools and equipment associated with the job such as, measuring tape, skill saw, drills, etc.
  • Must be able to conduct basic mathematical calculations rapidly and accurately.
  • Must be able to follow oral and written instructions and the ability to perform tasks quickly and accurately.
  • Must be able to work varying weather conditions on a daily basis.
  • Must be able to work independently and with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with water plant chemicals and related activities.
  • Knowledge of chemicals as applied to water treatment, standard laboratory principles, techniques, terminology, and equipment.
  • Ability to detect and take appropriate action in the operation of water treatment equipment chemical feeds machines and other related equipment.
  • Ability to understand and communicate policies, procedures, and services of the HWWS in order to make decisions in accordance with the fore mentioned and maintains accurate reports.
  • Working knowledge of applicable traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations involved in maintenance and repair of water lines
  • General knowledge of geographical areas of neighborhood.
  • Ability to communicate in both English and Spanish in technical terms.
