20.11 — Meter Reader Technician


Incumbent is responsible for documenting readings from water meters, records consumption and enters information into a hand held meter reading device. Performs technical level work in connecting/disconnecting water services and assists in the maintenance/replacement of water meters.

Essential Job Requirements


Responsible for the accurate reading and recording of consumption of water by customers through meter reads. Responsible for performing technical work associated with the connection and disconnection of meter services and assists in maintenance and replacement of water meters, including fire hydrant portable meters. Work includes keeping records according to established procedures to ensure proper billing and repairs. Employee must follow designated routes, receives specific instructions from and refers unusual situations and questions to supervisor. The nature of the work involves daily exposure to all types of weather conditions, extensive walking and the use of hand tools in clearing debris and other matter from meter boxes. Work is performed in accordance with established policies and procedures. Independent judgment and initiative are required in dealing with routine maintenance tasks. Considerable tact and courtesy are required when dealing with the public. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Serviceman II and Customer Service Director. Performance and issues will be periodically reviewed or as deemed necessary to ensure effective execution of assigned duties.

Required Skills

  • Must have a High School diploma or GED
  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License
  • Some customer service experience and basic computer skills
  • Knowledge of general plumbing and use of basic hand held tools
  • Must have the ability to read, record and accurately enter meter readings from a distance into a hand held meter reader
  • Must have ability to write legibly in order to write up daily information, work order requests, etc.
  • Ability to conduct basic mathematical calculations rapidly and accurately
  • Ability to understand and communicate policies, procedures, and services of the HWWS in order to make decisions in accordance with the fore mentioned.
  • Ability to perform tasks quickly and accurately
  • Must be able to learn the operation of equipment, follow meter routes, meter operation be able to drive throughout the city
  • Must be able to walk briskly for extensive distances under varying weather conditions for 7-10 hours a day
  • Must be able to work independently and with minimal supervision
