20.12 — Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Collection Maintenance/Repair

Perform technical work in the operation of the wastewater treatment plant to include the maintenance, inspection and repair of wastewater lift station structures, equipment and machinery. An operator may operate the wastewater treatment plant on a daily basis, inspecting the plant for efficient operation of equipment and reading various charts, graphs, gauges and meters. Work includes the collection and laboratory analysis of wastewater samples and the maintenance and minor repair of equipment at the treatment plant. Maintenance and repair duties require the application of journeyman level skill in several trades particularly areas such as mechanical, electrical, and plumbing. Although all work is performed in accordance with established procedures, duties require the exercise of judgment based on training and experience in making decisions and coordinating the proper operation of equipment. Work is performed under general supervision and is evaluated through observation and discussions in terms of the efficiency of the wastewater treatment plant operation.

Qualifications
  • Operates the wastewater treatment plant operation on a daily basis; observes the operation of bar screen and grit chambers, clarifiers, recirculation pumps, sludge pumps, and other operating units to insure proper operation and guard against equipment breakdown. Collects wastewater samples in order to conduct tests; prepares samples to be analyzed through complex testing procedures on a regular basis for plant and chemicals associated with the treatment of water.
  • Maintains records and prepares reports of laboratory results and data concerning the plant’s operation. Incumbent will perform minor repairs and maintenance on plant equipment, including the lubrication of motors and pumps. Monitor gauges, meters and control panels; observe variations in operating conditions and interpret meter and gauge readings, as well as test results.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and repairs lift station facilities, remote electric mechanical machinery and automotive equipment such as lubricates equipment, checks for malfunctions replaces packing in pumps and valves, etc.
  • Operate collectors, mixers, pumps, boilers, engines, generators, and other equipment used to control and adjust flows, treatment processes, washes out the settling basins and reservoirs on a regular basis.
  • Perform related work as assigned/required and assist the Maintenance Department as necessary.
  • Work schedule is subject to a rotating shift schedule.

Essential Job Requirements

Education
  • High School Diploma or GED
Certification
  • Certification at an “A”, “B”, “C”, or “D” level in wastewater plant operations or ability to obtain within a set time depending on the license and experience level
Experience
  • Must have experience in wastewater treatment plant operation, functions and mechanical repair work.
  • Experience in Journeyman skills preferred-plumbing, electrical, etc.
  • Experience in using common practices, tools, methods, techniques, basic hand tools and large equipment used daily
  • Working knowledge operating principles, processes, functions, practices and maintenance requirements of wastewater treatment plant system, purification of waste water, equipment and machinery.
  • Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with the wastewater plant activities.
  • Working knowledge of chemicals as applied to water treatment, standard laboratory principles, techniques, terminology, and equipment
  • Working knowledge to detect and take appropriate action in the operation of water treatment equipment chemical feeds machines and other related equipment
  • Working knowledge of chlorine safety and able to connect and disconnect chlorine tanks with assistance for safety purposes.
  • Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with water plant chemicals, related activities and lift stations.
  • Working knowledge of applicable traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations involved in maintenance and repair of water lines
  • General knowledge of geographical areas of neighborhood
  • Ability to understand and communicate policies, procedures, and services of the HWWS in order to make decisions in accordance with the fore mentioned and maintain accurate reports.
  • Ability to perform tasks quickly and accurately
  • Ability to communicate in both English and Spanish in technical terms
  • Some basic computer skills
Required Skills
  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License CDL Class “B” with Air Brakes and Tanker Endorsements- Preferred, or
  • Ability to obtain within three months of assignment
  • Must be able to conduct basic mathematical calculations rapidly and accurately
  • Must be able to follow oral and written instructions
  • Must be able to work varying weather conditions on a daily basis
  • Must be able to work independently and with minimal supervision
